General FAQ

What is the Eccles Theater?

The George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater is Salt Lake City’s newest performing arts center, scheduled to open in fall 2016.The state-of-the-art theater will feature the 2,500-seat Delta Performance Hall, an intimate black box theater, event and rehearsal spaces, a 6-story grand lobby, an outdoor plaza, and a galleria which will connect the theater to the adjacent 111 Main office tower. The theater’s various spaces will host national touring Broadway, concerts, comedy and other popular entertainment events, as well as innovative local performances and community events.

Where is the theater located?

The Eccles Theater is located at 131 South Main Street in downtown Salt Lake City. It is at the center of a thriving district that includes City Creek Center, Gallivan Plaza and dining and entertainment.

What happens at the Capitol Theatre?

The Capitol Theatre is home to the Utah Opera, Ballet West, The Gam Foundation Jazz Series, and other touring shows and new entertainment opportunities. The Eccles Theater will operate in conjunction with the Capitol Theatre and other downtown venues to maximize arts and entertainment options throughout Salt Lake City.

Where is the parking for the Eccles Theater?

Parking for the Eccles Theater is ample with nearly 1,000 stalls available in the Regent Street Parking garage directly east of the theater and about 5,000 more at nearby City Creek Center.

How was the Eccles Theater paid for?

The construction of the Eccles Theater was paid for through a combination of private funds and existing and new revenue streams. No new taxes will be required for theater construction or operation.

Why can’t existing performance venues accommodate touring Broadway and other large national shows?

The Capitol Theatre and Kingsbury Hall are beautifully restored buildings.  However, because of low seating capacity, blockbuster touring Broadway productions like “The Lion King” and “Wicked” often appear years earlier in other cities before coming to Salt Lake City. Both venues also have challenging load-in, lobby, backstage, seating, parking and concessions set-ups for larger touring shows.

Who operates the Eccles Theater?

The Salt Lake County Arts & Culture (SLCAC) will operate the Eccles Theater. The SLCAC is the  non-profit operator for existing public cultural venues in downtown including Capitol Theatre, Abravanel Hall and Jeanne Wagner Theatre. Operation by the SLCAC offers efficiency, expertise and economic advantages for this new venue.
